Spendthrift

Just bought my first python book…and Larry Ullman’s newer PHP5 book for reference. My beautiful web designer’s ideabook is coming in the mail (I am in love with the book), as are my Kangaroos (I got a nice-looking pair but ironically they don’t have zipper pockets because I didn’t want a skater shoe). I am a such spendthrift. The money I spent eating cheeburger is recouped because Arthur is giving me $10 for helping him get something.

But hey, let’s look on the bright side

1) I’m already getting pretty good at python
2) I need some more advanced PHP skills to finish this facebook app I’m making
3) My Kangaroos will mean no more sandalman Sam for a while! That is, unless I decide shoes aren’t my thing. This is the first time in a while I’ll be wearing shoes, after all…

Come to think of it, I’ve worn sandals every day for the past three years now. I wore these brown leather or brown suede skater shoes between 6th and 8th grade (later going to sneakers when I started XC but only during the season). Then I wore sneakers frosh year (running shoes), and soph year I did sandals for most of the year but not during most of the winter (I didn’t realize socks with sandals worked until Kev Hsu demonstrated it to me on one particular occasion). Then I wore sandals all junior year, in the winter too, and all senior year so far. But iono, even though I have 4 pairs of sandals (had 5, one broke), each pair is by now really worn out. So shoes…hmm. Should I wear them every day?

We’ll see! Speaking of which, the facebook app is coming along pretty well. I’ve essentially digested what I need to know about facebook dev (the wiki is pretty well-documented) though I had to switch my server to process PHP5 instead of PHP4 (the ApocCore Gaming Engine uses PHP4 but since I’m not actively developing that right now it doesn’t matter). I also made some (hopefully final) changes to my system before I get totally settled in (got sick of Banshee so swapped out for old-school Audacious/BMP), and I’m hoping to not have to use Windows again for another good four years or so. Or forever, doesn’t matter particularly to me.

As my bank account fluctuates between $100 and $400, I realize I might need to do something else besides rely on tutoring and ad revenue to save money. I think I’ll pick up some freelance design jobs if I find time. Though, I also realize I’m doing an insanely large amount of things with my minuscule amount of time. Let’s see…I go to school+do my homework,+study for tests which are the basics, then I tutor, run, develop for three current projects, spend a little time each day learning python, and maybe do a little design work on the side. Oh, and the most I waste time is when I’m reconfiguring my systems or installing things.

I’m just happy I’m doing that and not playing games like other people. Haha. Though, I did get Halo to work on Linux. Ironically, CrossOver Games 7 (I got it legit when they had a free-downloads day) didn’t work, and I ended up manually configuring Wine to make it work. But it works. And I don’t play it. I just leave it there, in case someday people invite me to a LAN party and laugh at my linux system saying “that can’t play games,” and I whip out Halo and CS Source and Spore (well it supports CS and Team Fortress and Spore but I don’t actually have any of those games) — and I will laugh and say SILLY WINDOWS USER. I’VE HAD ENOUGH OF 4 MONTHS OF DISTRACTIONS AND A HORRIBLE WORK ENVIRONMENT. No really, I don’t understand how people live without at least four workspaces. And I don’t get how they cope with freezing applications, no terminal, and the best replacement for alt+f2 is a program called launchy which is sort of lame because I never did remember to press alt+space. I guess I’d just have to get used to it…but usually I’m digging through the start menu before I even remember to press it. Oh and programming, dev, getting a server working on windows…it’s really annoying not having absolute control. Meh.

Okay I’m being immature and silly right now but I just had a lot of caffeine cause of that frapp and I’m in a bit of a high because I’m excited to get cracking on this facebook app.
